Emergency contraception (EC) is a high dose of regular birth control pills which, if taken within 120 hours of unprotected sex, may prevent pregnancy. You can obtain this medication the following ways:
You may purchase EC over the counter at the pharmacy with valid photo ID if you are 18 years of age or older. However, not all pharmacies keep this medicine on their shelves — call your local pharmacy first to check. CVS pharmacies have guaranteed that they will stock and dispense this medication. The cost is usually between $30 and $50.
You may also get EC at any of Pennsylvania's Planned Parenthood health centers. To find the one nearest you, call 1-800-230-PLAN (7526). The medication is offered at a sliding scale cost, so your income will determine the cost of EC. Click here for a list of Planned Parenthood affiliates and their health centers.
Some university and college health centers also provide a broad range of sexual health services; call to find out if they also offer EC on campus.
