Pennsylvania Advocacy Organizations Launch Get Out the Vote Campaign Ahead of Midterms
Organizations will knock on 800,000 doors in the next two weeks

Harrisburg, PA (October 23, 2018) – With just two weeks to go until the midterm elections, three of Pennsylvania’s progressive advocacy organizations launched their Get Out the Vote (GOTV) campaign to encourage voter turnout on November 6. GOTV encourages voters to make a concrete plan on Election Day, including knowing where they will vote and how they will get to their polling place.

Pennsylvania is the epicenter of the upcoming midterms. According to Politico, Democrats in Pennsylvania are poised to take up to six congressional seats, which is one quarter of what is needed nationwide to take over the majority in the House.

Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania Votes, For Our Future Pennsylvania and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), along with 17 other members of the statewide America Votes coalition, will knock on 800,000 doors in 32 counties during the last two weeks of the campaign. This joint effort is the largest GOTV program in the state.

“With a more conservative Supreme Court, abortion access and reproductive rights in this country are in danger. It is critical that we elect champions for reproductive health care who will protect these freedoms in Pennsylvania,” said Sari Stevens, executive director of Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania Votes. “Through Get Out the Vote, we want to turn people’s interest in these issues into action and make sure that Pennsylvanians get to the polls on Election Day.”

“Since February, For Our Future Pennsylvania has knocked on more than 600,000 doors to understand which issues matter most to Pennsylvanians,” said For Our Future Pennsylvania State Director Dena Gleason. “In the final two weeks leading up to the election, our canvassers will harness and share the positive energy surrounding the Democratic ticket and ensure Pennsylvanians make a plan to vote on November 6.”

Canvassers with Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania Votes will knock on 123,440 doors during GOTV, with 41,500 of those knocks in key legislative races. For Our Future Pennsylvania will knock around 140,000 doors during GOTV, with more than 40,500 of those doors concentrated in districts with key legislative races.

In addition to door knocking, Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania Votes has launched a six-figure digital ad campaign and will provide voters with information on making a plan to vote and on the candidates for office, so they can make an informed decision when they get to the polls. For Our Future Pennsylvania also launched a GOTV digital campaign today.

“The stakes for working people in this election could not be higher. It’s literally a do or die decision if you care about the rights of Pennsylvanians to join together to bargain for better wages, benefits and working conditions,” said Steve Catanese, president of SEIU Local 668. “That’s why more than 80 SEIU member political organizers are out meeting voters one-on-one and helping them make a plan for Election Day.”

The America Votes Pennsylvania coalition, made up of more than 50 progressive electoral and issue advocacy organizations, will collectively knock on close to 1.5 million doors during this election cycle to talk to voters about issues and elections that matter most to Pennsylvanians.
