On Final Day to Register to Vote in PA, Non-Profit Groups Highlight Gubernatorial Candidates’ Voter Rights Records

Harrisburg, PA (October 9, 2018) – Today marks the final day for voters to register for the midterm election, a process Governor Tom Wolf has worked to make more accessible to Pennsylvanians.

More than one million Pennsylvanians have registered to vote online since online voter registration was enacted by Governor Tom Wolf in August 2015. Governor Wolf has continued his work to make elections more fair and accessible from big cities to rural communities, including putting forward his 21st Voting Reform Plan for Pennsylvania to make it easier for Pennsylvanians to vote.

In contrast, Scott Wagner has bought into President Trump’s false claims about widespread voter fraud without any evidence. Worse, Wagner’s solution is to purge voter rosters and make it harder for Pennsylvanians to vote.

On this important date, non-profit organizations, Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania Votes, For Our Future Pennsylvania, NextGen Pennsylvania, Philly Neighborhood Networks, and PA Statewide Indivisible want to remind voters of the gubernatorial candidates’ records on voter rights.

Statement from Sari Stevens, Executive Director, Planned Parenthood PA Votes:

“It is clear that Governor Wolf and Scott Wagner are in opposition when it comes to Pennsylvanians’ rights and freedoms. Governor Wolf wants Pennsylvanians to be able to carry out their constitutional rights, and Scott Wagner wants to make the voting process as difficult as possible. Pennsylvanians need to ask themselves: who do they want in the Governor’s office for the next four years: someone who will make exercising their rights easier, or someone who won’t?”

Statement from Dena Gleason, State Director, For Our Future Pennsylvania:

“As Republicans in Harrisburg continue to put forward harmful voter ID laws and other voter suppression efforts that specifically target communities of color, Governor Wolf has fought to advance the rights of all voters. Meanwhile, Scott Wagner promotes voter fraud conspiracies in a desperate effort to stop voters who are less likely to vote Republican from voting at all. Pennsylvanians deserve a governor who encourages all residents to exercise their voting rights, not someone like Scott Wagner who wants to pick and choose who can vote.”

Statement from Jarrett Smith, State Director, NextGen Pennsylvania:

“The right to vote is at the center of our democracy, and Republicans like Scott Wagner are trying to silence the voices of young Pennsylvania voters to benefit their own hateful agenda. Everyone — regardless of race, class, or age — deserves a voice in our electoral process. Young voters want a governor who will defend our most important rights, which is why they will turn out to elect Tom Wolf and Democrats up and down the ticket this November.”

Statement from Stan Shapiro, Vice-Chair, Philly Neighborhood Networks:

“All around the nation, curtailing and suppressing the right to vote of millions of poor, female, African-American and working class Americans is a central component of Republican electoral strategy. They seek nothing less than to end real democracy in this country and to elevate the one percent to permanent rule. The face of the Republican disenfranchisement campaign in Pennsylvania is Scott Wagner. He can only be stopped by working all-out for Tom Wolf and the entire Democratic ticket.”

Statement from Mikhel Harrison, State Director, PA Statewide Indivisible:

“Scott Wagner supports dated Voter ID laws that are meant to suppress communities of color. It is clear, now more than ever, that Governor Wolf supports fair elections that give a voice to all Pennsylvanians.”
