Pennsylvania’s Primary is April 26–Think it doesn’t matter? Think Again.

Posted on April 14, 2016

Everyone knows the Governor serves statewide and plays a crucial role in protecting and advocating for Planned Parenthood and Planned Parenthood’s patients, from providing a veto to dangerous legislation to helping ensure equality for all Pennsylvanians to promoting access to health care. But there are other statewide offices that matter, too.

The Governor isn’t up for election this year, but these other critical statewide offices are. In just over a week – on April 26th – you’ll be able to cast your vote in the primary election to help choose the next nominee for President and United States Senate and Congress, but also for the state row offices of Attorney General, Auditor General, and Treasurer. Here’s a bit more about why these row offices matter.

Attorney General

What does the Attorney General do? The Attorney General is PA’s top law enforcement official, with a wide range of responsibility to protect and serve the citizens and agencies of the Commonwealth. In some states, the office of Attorney General has been used to aggressively attack or investigate abortion providers. In other states, the Attorney General’s office has played a proactive role in ensuring access to reproductive healthcare.

Josh Shapiro is the endorsed candidate for Attorney General, and we know Josh will protect Planned Parenthood and Pennsylvania women from political attacks aimed at closing health center doors.

Auditor General

The Auditor General is the chief fiscal watchdog of the commonwealth and is responsible for using audits to ensure that all state money is spent legally and properly. Our current Auditor General, Eugene DePasquale, has stood by Planned Parenthood for years, and we know he will continue to do so.

Treasurer

The PA Treasury is an independent part of state government whose duty is to safeguard and manage the state’s public funds. Joe Torsella is the endorsed candidate, as he supports access to safe and legal abortion, as well as preventive family planning services.
